Margaret M. Sorensen, 83 years of age from Grand Island, formerly of Minden passed away on Friday, November 18, 2016 in Grand Island. Funeral services will be on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Minden with Rev. Paul Blanchard officiating. Burial will be in the Upland Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Layton-Craig Funeral Home in Minden on Friday from 3-5 p.m.
Margaret was born March 27, 1933 in Ulysses, NE to Peter and Ruth (Cooper) Smith. She attended and graduated from Ulysses Public Schools in 1951 and then attended and graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1955. She taught home economics from 1955-57 in Arapahoe, NE.
While student teaching in Minden she met her true love and eventually married Gerald Sorensen on August 11, 1957 at the United Methodist Church in Ulysses. They made their home southeast of Minden. To this union four sons were raised, Edward, Robert, Charles and Jerry. Margaret loved and lived the life of a wife and mother on the farm--from gardening to driving grain carts. She taught nursery Sunday school for 25+ years and also led the local 4-H kids for many years. She also enjoyed her social clubs: South Central Extension Club, Danish Brotherhood and United Methodist Women. Then she found her calling being a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile holding multiple offices including being State Representative of the Grand Representatives for OES and Past Queen of the Daughters of the Nile.
Gerald and Margaret moved into Minden in 2004. Gerald passed away December 15, 2007. Margaret moved to Grand Island in 2010 where she resided at Primrose Retirement Community until her passing.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Gerald, and great grandson, Elijah Blackburn. She is survived by sons Edward (Roxanne) Sorensen, Axtell, Robert (Annette) Sorensen, Grand Island, Charles (special friend, Amy Kapperman) Sorensen, Lincoln, Jerry (Chris) Sorensen, Pasco, WA; four grandchildren, Audra (Jeremy) Dennis, Kensington, KS, Michael (Misty) Sorensen, Axtell, Kathryn Sorensen, Axtell, Crystal (David) Gomez, Hastings; three great grandchildren, Braden Sorensen, Kendall Kleen, and Gracelyn Blackburn; sister, Elinor Bloomgren, Denver, CO and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
