Donna Ruth Holmes, daughter of Emil A. and Emma C. (Voight) Seda, was born May 4, 1933 near Fullerton, NE. She began school at District #19 west of Fullerton. After the family moved to rural Albion, NE, she attended District #74. Donna graduated from Albion High School in 1950. She worked at the Ford dealership in Albion as a secretary and at the regional telephone company in Columbus. Wanting to further her education, she then attended the University of Nebraska and took a position as a collection correspondent for General Motors in Omaha.
On September 4, 1956, Donna was united in marriage to Richard A. (Dick) Holmes at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Albion, NE. They were partners in the Holmes Equipment Company, selling farm equipment and automobiles. The couple made their home in Albion and were blessed with two children, Karla Kay and Charles Anthony. In 1972, they moved to Minden, NE and opened the Gambles Store.
After retiring in 1985, Dick and Donna enjoyed traveling, especially taking long drives around the state. They challenged each other nightly with cribbage games, playing for pennies and running a never-ending tally. Through her love of cards and games Donna enriched her grandchildren's math skills by teaching them to play cribbage and Yahtzee. She was an avid card player and was a longtime member of the Duplicate Bridge Group in Minden. Donna was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and for many years was the official church gravy maker. Her other talents included cooking, gardening (her prized tomatoes had slices that filled an entire plate!) and sewing.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children: Karla Paulsen and husband Marshall of Minden; Chuck Holmes and wife Robin of Columbus; grandchildren: Lani Jensen (Adam); Michael Paulsen; Justin Holmes; Kenneth German (Mikala);Brandi Taylor (Ethan); eight great-grandchildren; brother: Virgil Seda of Albion, NE; sisters-in-law: Jean Ward of Greeley CO; Judy (Mike) O'Dell of Laguna Beach CA; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
