James "Jim" K. Tomsen, 77, of Upland, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2024 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at Fredericksburg Lutheran Church, south of Minden, with Rev. Donald Hunzeker and PMA Julie Schmidt officiating. Interment will be held following the service at the Fredericksburg Lutheran Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials in Jim's honor are kindly suggested to the Fredericksburg Lutheran Church or the Fredericksburg Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Craig Funeral Home in Minden.
James Kent Tomsen was born on November 6, 1946 in Minden to Nels and Luella (Meyer) Tomsen. He grew up in the Minden area and was a member of Fredericksburg Lutheran Church, where he was confirmed in 1961. While attending Minden High School Jim played football and wrestled his senior year. Only wrestling for one year, he qualified for state and made it to the semi-finals. He graduated in the class of 1965.
He continued his education at Dana College where he also played football, wrestled and met Luanne Mae Hiemke. They were united in marriage on June 2, 1968 in Hartland, WI. To this union, four children were born: Ulysses "Jon", Bjorn, Katrina, and Gunnar. On September 12, 1968 Jim entered the United States Army where he served his country until his honorable discharge on September 11, 1974. The family later made their home in Minden where Jim farmed and ranched for many years. He also lived in Germany, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
Jim was a licensed Certified Nurse's Aide. He was a member of Texas Longhorn Breeders Association and the American Quarter Horse Association. His interests were playing cards (Some-R-Set), riding his motorcycle, gardening, and beekeeping.
Those left to cherish his memory include children, Ulysses "Jon" (Karissa), Bjorn (Cassandra), Katrina (Edward) Burkhardt, and Gunnar (Elizabeth); grandchildren, Jase and Tucker Tomsen; Grant, Taya and Thayer Tomsen; and Theodore Tomsen; sister, Betty (Fred) Kempf; a host of nieces, nephews, and extended relatives; his former wives, Donna Morris, and Jean Tremblay; and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Luanne Tomsen; brothers, Donald, Willis "Tiny", and Charles "Chuck"; his nephew, Charles "Andy" Tomsen; and former wife, Elaine Codner.
