Kay M. Haffey, 80, of Kearney, formerly of Axtell, passed away on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at Kearney Regional Medical Center ~ Bryan Health. A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 12, 2024 at St. John's Catholic Church in Minden with Fr. Evan Winter officiating. The service will be streamed to the Craig Funeral Home Facebook page. Inurnment will be held directly following the service at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Axtell. A memorial book signing will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at Craig Funeral Home in Minden. Memorials in Kay's honor are kindly suggested to the family for later designation. Arrangements are under the care of Craig Funeral Home in Minden.
Kay M. Haffey was born in Holdrege on August 12, 1943 to Eugene Robert and Ethel Maxine (Schroder) Quinn of Oxford. She grew up in the Oxford area and attended school at Oxford Community School. After attending cosmetology school in McCook, she was an instructor for the school for a couple years.
She was united in marriage to Gerald "Jerry" Lee Haffey on September 24, 1962 in Oxford and to this union, four children were born: Angelia, Jeffrey, Nicholas and Kyle. The family lived in Holdrege and Kearney before making their home in Axtell, where she was fortunate to be a homemaker.
Kay was a member of the Axtell Fire Department and served as an EMT for many years. She was also a member of St. Johns Catholic Church in Minden, and the "Domesticated Debs" extension club. She enjoyed ceramics, reading, camping, as well as playing and watching volleyball. Kay loved music and playing the piano, as well as going to the mountains. Most of all though, she loved spending time with her family.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Angelia Weaver of Axtell, Jeffrey (Wendi) Haffey of Axtell, Nicholas (Shannon) Haffey of Axtell, and Kyle (Jennifer) Haffey of Missouri Valley, IA; grandchildren, Brandin Weaver, Riley Weaver, Chelsie Weaver, Blake Haffey, Haley Melley, Courtney Haffey, Micaela Haffey, Schylar Weaver, Jack Haffey, and Benjamin Haffey; 7 great-grandchildren; sister, Kim Wilsey of Grand Island; brother-in-law, Tom (Kay) Haffey of Lincoln; sisters-in-law, Marilyn (Steve) Martin of Arapahoe, and Carla Quinn of McCook; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives, and close friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald "Jerry" Lee Haffey; parents, Eugene and Maxine Quinn; brothers, Max Quinn and Richard Quinn; brother-in-law, Philip Wilsey; and parents-in-law, Leo and Clementine Haffey.
