Kenneth Paul Burger, 91, of Summerfield, KS, passed away on January 27, 2018 at Bethany Care Home in Minden, NE. Kenneth was born on November 26, 1926, to Golda Pierce and John Sr. Burger near Summerfield, KS. He grew up and attended country schools near Mina and St. Bridget through the 8th grade. He honorably served his country from 1955 to 1957 with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On February 10, 1954, he was united in marriage to Phyllis C. Wietharn at the Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville, KS. The Burgers lived and farmed southeast of Summerfield in the St. Bridget area, and were longtime members of the Holy Family Catholic Church. Kenneth enjoyed farming, playing cards, fishing, hunting, going to casinos, and being with his family. He was known for his happy-go-lucky demeanor and contagious smile. Kenneth was active in the community, serving on the St. Bridget township board, Summerfield fire board, USD 488 school board, Rural Water District #3 board, and the church council. He was a commander of the American Legion post in Summerfield, KS and a lifetime member of Legion Post #346 in Liberty, NE. Those left to cherish the memory of Ken include his wife, Phyllis, of 63 years; daughter Kathy (Ron) Smith, Home, KS; daughter Deb (Fritz) Claussen, Minden, NE; son Gregory (Elizabeth) Lecompton, KS; and brother Richard (Phyllis) Axtell, KS. Also four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The rosary will be prayed Friday, Feb. 2 at 6pm at Holy Family Catholic Church; a Holy Mass and Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 3 at 11am, also at Holy Family Catholic Church. The family suggests any memorials be sent to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration.
