Obituary

Mary Ellen Adkins of Bakersfield, California, passed away peacefully at her home on October 22, 2023. Mary was born on August 11, 1965 to Jesse and Sharon Adkins of Minden, Nebraska, as a blond haired, blue eyed, ball of energy. She is survived by her sister, Katherine Adkins, and her family, including, Kevin Biggers, Zoe Biggers and John Biggers, and her brother, Chip Adkins and his family, including, Lea Ann Adkins, Jesse T. Adkins, IV, and John D. Adkins.

As a teacher for 32 years in the Bakersfield, California public school system, Mary was known as a strong advocate for her students. She was active in the school community, serving at various times as a coach, mentor and activities leader. Mary lit up every time she shared stories about her students, including triumphs and tragedies, revealing how much she truly cared for each one. She was most proud of the student who "turned it around" by buckling in and working hard. She shared those stories far and wide. Her contributions to her students are reflected in the many personal notes given to her over the years she taught.

Mary was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt and friend who touched the lives of many. She was an avid reader, devouring romance novels and mysteries. She also loved to draw and took up Mandala art as a hobby, making elaborate and colorful drawings, which she shared with pride. One thing Mary did not like to do was cook. So, whenever she could get a home cooked meal, she enjoyed those with her family heartily. Otherwise, she ate like a bird. Mary had a good sense of humor and loved clever, off-color jokes. Mary loved the ocean, beach vacations, swimming and generally being near water. It was common when Mary was growing up for her to be near lakes and water, something she and her family shared together. Mary was tough as nails but also had the softest heart. This combination of strengths no doubt helped her battle her greatest foe, cancer. She exemplified courage as she faced many challenges throughout her life with a strong will and determination to overcome.

When Mary was younger, she was an outstanding athlete, competing in track and field, basketball, and volleyball in high school. She held the record for the fastest 100-yard dash in her hometown for nearly 40 years, clocking in at 12.67 seconds – not bad for a small-town girl. Her speed came from her father, whom she greatly admired, and that relationship remained a source of strength for her throughout her lifetime.
