Peggy A. Benson, 65, of Axtell, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. A celebration of life open house will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Monday, December 4, 2023 at The Windmill Studios, located at 521 N. Colorado Avenue in Minden. There will be no visitation. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Peggy's honor are kindly suggested to her family for later designation. Arrangements are under the care of Craig Funeral Home in Minden.
Peggy Ann Benson was born on May 9, 1958 in Fremont, Nebraska to Robert D. and Frances M. (Chambers) Hauver. She attended school in Kearney and graduated from Kearney Senior High with the class of 1976. In 1980, Peggy began her career as a deputy sheriff with the Kearney County Sheriff's Office, where she worked for almost 20 years. During her time in law enforcement, she worked as the Kearney County Civil Defense director and began the Kearney County diversion program. Peggy was also deeply involved with the Nebraska Special Olympics for over 23 years. She had a true passion for helping those in need.
On January 14, 1989, she was united in marriage to Dudley E. Benson in Minden and to this union, two sons were born: Brady and Brandon. The family made their home in Minden. She and Dudley purchased the Attitudes Bar & Grill in Axtell in 1999 and moved to Axtell in 2001. They sold Attitudes in 2016. Peggy later began employment with Dismas Charities in Kearney and most recently BK Commodities in Minden, where she worked at the time of her passing.
Peggy loved horses, especially barrel racing. She enjoyed watching her children grow and attending their sporting events, where everyone knew she was present with the sound of her trademark cowbell! She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and Kansas City Chiefs fan. She loved to sing and dance to the song "Ring of Fire". Peggy enjoyed spending time at the lake and playing pitch with family and friends. She will be fondly remembered by many whom she interacted with.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Dudley Benson; sons, Brady (Ashley) Benson and their children, Brighton and Berringer, and Brandon (Brooke) Benson and their son, Sutton; sisters, Franny (Tom) Madsen, Cindy (Jerry) Foote, and Becky (Charlie) Huggins; brother, Rich (Mona) Hauver; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and close friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Robert D. Hauver, Jr.
