Richard "Dick" L. Binder, 81, of Minden, passed away on Monday, April 29, 2024 at his home in Minden. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May, 6, 2024 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Minden with Rev. William Zwick officiating. The service will be streamed to the church's YouTube page. Military honors will be presented following the service outside of the church. Interment will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery in Lincoln, NE. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, 2024 at Craig Funeral Home in Minden. Memorials in Dick's honor are kindly suggested to the Minden American Legion or to the Heartwell Veterans of Foreign Wars. Arrangements are under the care of Craig Funeral Home in Minden.
Richard "Dick" Lee Binder was born on April 11, 1943 in Sioux City, IA to Albert and Esther (Meyer) Binder. He grew up on a farm near South Sioux City, NE area and attended South Sioux City Public Schools, graduating in June of 1961. While in high school, he participated in football, drama, band, choir, and various vocal small groups.
He attended Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, NE. While attending Midland, he met the love of his life, Sharon A. Gordon, who was a student nurse at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha. Dick went on active duty with the United States Navy in June of 1964, going to Hospital Corp School in Great Lakes, IL. Upon his completion of training, he returned home and married Sharon on October 3, 1964. The couple left for the U.S. Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA, where he was stationed until May 1966. Dick then received orders to serve at US Naval Hospital, NSA Da Nang South Vietnam from June 1966 to June 1967. Upon his return, he was transferred to US Naval Hospital in Bremerton, WA. Upon his discharge in 1968, they remained in the Bremerton area until 1971 when they returned to Nebraska.
This union was blessed with four children: Trudi, Julie, Amy and Matt. He enjoyed his children, and followed their activities, coaching softball, football and baseball.
He returned to college and received his degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1977.
In 2002, he moved to Minden. He coached Legion Baseball for a number of years. Dick was a member of American Legion Post 94, and a life member of Veterans of Foreign War Post 3606 in Lincoln. He was also member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Minden. Dick enjoyed bowling, coaching, and watching the kids play ball, as well as auto racing, but most importantly spending time with his family.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Julie Michal of Lincoln; and Amy (Eric) Boop of Lincoln; son, Matt (Dorothy) Binder of Minden; grandchildren, Joshua, Cori, Cam, Shannon, Michaela, Hope, Tyler, Xavier, Gracie, Trysten, Whitney, Dillayn, Nicolas, and Lukas; ten great-grandchildren; as well as a host of extended relatives and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Sharon; daughter, Trudi Binder; and son-in-law, Jon Michal.
