Obituary

Timothy Ray "Pete" Peterson age 70 died at his home in the Benson Neighborhood of Omaha on June 4, 2024. Born at Sealey Hospital in Minden, Nebraska on June 19, 1953, Pete was the first child of Donald Ray and Glendora "Glennie" Grace (Wieting) Peterson. He was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Minden and attended East Elementary in Minden.
He moved with his family to Sargent, Nebraska, and made many good friends and love of the outdoors while living in the Sandhills. He was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Sargent, and graduated from Sargent High School in 1971. While in Sargent, he learned the art of meat cutting and good customer service while working at his parents' grocery store – skills that he kept well-honed until the day he died.

He attended Hastings College where he graduated with a B.A. in Business and made new lifelong friends while living in "the house" off campus. He stayed connected with these friends over the decades including gatherings at Johnson Lake in the early summer. He also met his soon-to-be wife while at Hastings College; Tim and Kathleen "Kathy" Gardner married at the French Chapel on the campus of Hastings College in 1979. The two made their married life on an acreage between Roseland and Juniata. To this union three children were born: Alexander (Alex) Alden, Laura Marie, and Anne Kathleen. During this time, Tim was an active member of the choir at First Presbyterian Church in Hastings, and the Hastings Community Theater.

He moved to Omaha about 20 years ago, working at Protex Central until his retirement. In Omaha he built a strong community of friends, especially at The Underwood Bar ("The Wood"), which he always called his version of Cheers. His health deteriorated in the last few years but his interests in collecting antiques, Husker Football, and hanging out with his friends at The Wood, remained.

His children were a huge sense of pride for him, and, in the last couple of years, his grandchildren. He was always ready with some recent photos and videos and enjoyed singing to them on FaceTime. Those left to cherish his memory are his children Alex Peterson and spouse, Kelly Moughty of Falls Church, Virginia; Laura Peterson of Hastings, NE, and Anne Peterson Maffitt, of Lehi, Utah. Grandchildren Charles Vincent, Claire Madelyn, & Everleigh Grace Maffitt of Lehi, Utah. Sisters Krista Tophoj and spouse Brad of Grand Island, NE and Dena Beck and spouse David of Minden, NE many cousins, nieces and nephews, and cherished friends.

He was preceded in death by parents Donald Ray Peterson, Glendora Grace Peterson, step-father John L. Zoeller, sister Carmel Sue, brother Jason Thomas Peterson, step-sister Janet Stark, Grandparents Arvid and Laura Peterson and Henry and Edith Wieting.

Memorials can be made to the family (Anne Maffitt) for designation at a later date.
